The Litas are a worldwide female motorcycle collective that have created a much needed space for women riders from every walk of life in the motorcycle world. With hundreds of Collectives and tens of thousands of members worldwide the Litas are a force of nature! During a cold winter up north some ladies from Salt Lake and Idaho Falls loaded up bikes and headed south to Las Vegas with good riding and good times on the agenda. In the lead was Litas’ founder and all around boss Jessica Wise. Coming down from Salt Lake with Jess was the ever stoked Ash ripping ‘Morty’ her custom Harley-Davidson Sportster build. Megan, who was a very new rider, made her own way down for her first real motorcycle trip. From Idaho Falls were Nikki and Lisa. Lisa has years of riding under her belt including a few huge cross country trips. Bringing up the rear as a guest was our very own course instructor Nikki. Everyone was more than excited to shake off some of the winter rust and lay down some desert miles.

In true Litas’ fashion the ladies came together quickly figuring out roles and helping Megan get comfortable riding in a group. Leaving from Vegas the gals headed to Boulder City for breakfast. Around the table stories were told and rich experiences were shared. Lisa captivated the group with the story of her most recent cross country trip which included a breakdown in Florida where her bike had given up the ghost so she traded it in and bought the Softail she was now riding. With bellies full and coffee cups empty everyone saddled up for a scenic cruise through the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. A few thunderclouds in the distance threatened rain but ended up passing by making for a slightly windy but beautiful day. With some twisty desert roads and a few good scenic overlooks between them the group really came together as one. Each rider was riding their own ride while also riding with and for the group. In short order they had found that perfect balance in a group ride that makes it as seamless as a solo ride with all the perks of having someone to share it with.

The red sandstone, yellow dunes, and black asphalt were melting away quickly as the group pulled in for a stretch and some gas in Echo Bay, a mostly deserted marina that has been slowly eaten by time as Lake Mead’s shores continue to retreat. Everyone was all smiles and how could you not be with all of the incredible scenery and good company. The next stop was the Valley of Fire and it did not disappoint! The unanimous decision for the best part of the trip was the Valley of Fire. As soon as the group rolled in they spotted a herd of BigHorn Sheep so bikes were stopped and pictures were taken. The winding roads of the valley seem otherworldly surrounded by wind swept red cliffs and formations. The group spent as much time as they could taking it all in before racing the sunset back to Vegas.

The real excitement on the second day of the trip was meeting up with the Las Vegas Litas! Both groups met up at a local brewery in the Henderson Water Street area and instantly hit it off. Due to their connection of being Litas and riding motorcycles everyone was instant friends and even before the first drink was served there was laughter and deep conversations around the table. The ladies of the Las Vegas Litas were from every walk of life and one of the members Jeannine was from Germany, had founded the first German Litas Collective in Cologne, and used the Litas’ network in her travels to find motorcycle family all over the globe! Connections were made and good times were had by all.

The last day of this desert getaway was spent on a short but cold early morning ride out to the Nelson Ghost Town. The buildings and eclectic mix of antiques kept the group entertained for hours. Once everyone had their fill of the ghost town it was time to say goodbye. Amidst hugs and promises for future rides you could really see not only why the Litas are such a powerful group but also why they are such an essential group. Given their own time and space the collective experiences of these women create powerful unspoken bonds and strength. If you are a woman rider looking for some riding buddies we strongly recommend you find your locals Litas’ chapter and give them a chance. Thank you so much to all the riders for letting us tag along and be part of such a great weekend!
